In this 5-day course, we will build a small wall-hung cabinet. This class is designed for those who want to learn how a woodworking project comes together, from start to finish. We will discuss the design, material selection, and construction of a project. You will also learn about the principles of machine joinery and some of the most common construction techniques. We will learn how to make a sliding door as well as how to build and fit a drawer. While this project may look simplistic to some many lessons in this project will make you a  better problem solver and woodworker. 

Course Objectives

  • Refine woodworking skills and apply them to a project. 

  • Learn how to create and work from plans 

  • Understanding the lumber yard and how to select materials 

  • Learn machine joinery including; miter, rabbets, stop dados, and splines 

  • Develop skills to create your own woodworking plans 



Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Gain a deep understanding of design principles and their practical application 

  • Enhance proficiency in sketching and creating scale drawings 

  • Acquire knowledge of joinery techniques and their suitability for different furniture projects 

  • Learn to select appropriate materials for your designs 

  • Build confidence in your woodworking skills 

Tools 

Required:

  • Personal protective equipment 

  • Notepad 

  • Pencil/pen 

  • Combination square 

  • Measuring tape

Recommended:

If you have any tools you use regularly, please feel free to bring them along.

Prerequisites

Open to all. This class is for those students who already have some hands-on experience but want guidance and help realizing a project. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced woodworker looking to learn new skills, this course is ideal for anyone interested in tackling a woodworking project from a set of plans.

Classes run 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday in Building 304 at Fort Worden. Map
